I was a skype guest at a recent Highlights weekend retreat for writers of early readers. I've never done anything like this, but when it's the editor of Mercy Watson who asks you --the class was led by the awesome editor and author Kara LaReau, you say yes --yes for hot buttered toast.
At first I was terrified by the idea of it, but Kara said it would be fun, and she was right. Because I liked the nitty gritty questions they asked me -- like how the process of writing a chapter book is different from a picture book, and how I determined the content and placement of the artwork. Thanks so much to the Highlights Foundation for such a nice opportunity. I only wished I was taking the course myself.
